It’s a beautiful sunny spring day with the temperature in the 80s. Naturally, the grass is shooting up, and it’s time to break out the heavy equipment. I pulled out my trusty electric lawn mower and gave it a workover to get it ready for the season. Electric? Yes, and I’m so happy that I went that way eleven years ago. This Neuton CE6 has lasted pretty well, although I’ve had to buy a new battery and several new blades over that time. I traded in my gas-powered machine for it in 2008. I know, electric lawn mowers aren’t for everybody. But if you don’t have a large expanse of grass to cut, it’s a great (and very green) option. This one will run for about a half-hour on a charge, which is barely enough to get my job done. But, I’ve just seeded a large new area, so I’m thinking about shopping for a new one. I bet they’ve gotten a lot better in the last decade. Any suggestions?
Why do I love it?
1. It starts first time, every time.
2. It doesn’t spit out noxious fumes.
3. It’s comparatively quiet.
4. I don’t buy any gas for it.
5. I don’t have to change the oil.
6. So it’s cheaper to operate. Well, mostly … maybe not if you count buying new batteries every five years or so.
Why it might not be for you: it bogs down in thick grass, and you have to remember to charge the battery a day before you want to use it. Maybe the newer ones are more powerful, quicker to charge and hold a charge better. That’s what I’m hoping for.
What do you think?
